School foundation seeks higher profile

Monday, March 29, 2004

With the Lawrence school district weighing the possibility of deep budget cuts, the Lawrence Schools Foundation is hoping to come to the rescue.

The organization, which first got its start in 1986, hopes with a new director the group also will be more recognizable within the community.

"We have had a pretty low profile for the last few years, but I am hoping that will change," said director Susan Hazlett. "It is time for the foundation to go to the next level."

But going to the next level will not happen without the help from people in the community.

"We want people in the community not just parents of students, but everyone to know they will benefit from good public schools," Hazlett said.

The not-for-profit organization provides families, individuals and businesses a way to make contributions to support Lawrence schools.

Now the organization is hoping that by putting flyers at area banks, grocery stores, and even in schools will get more people involved.

"Rather than relying on mailings that we have done in the past we want to get out in front of groups, meet people one on one," Hazlett said.

Meeting people one-on-one is also getting easier for the foundation after a grant from the Douglas County Community Foundation totaling $8,300.

"It's money that we plan to use to purchase technology," Hazlett said. "A laptop, projector, anything that is needed to talk in front of large groups about what we are trying to accomplish is what we plan to purchase with that money."
