Today is the last day smoking is allowed indoors and many took advantage of the day to savor that last cigarette. At the stoke of midnight, the city-wide smoking ban will take effect. Many Lawrence residents packed in as many cigaragettes as possible during the day.

Lawrence woke up to more wet weather this morning. But the storm system that dropped another 0.4 of an inch of rain on Lawrence during the early morning hours is expected to clear out by the afternoon, said Matt Sayers, 6News meteorologist.

The shelves at the Lawrence Public Library are about to get more full. The Lawrence City Commission has given preliminary approval to a 21% increase in funding for 2005. Officials have said that this is one of the worst funded among the states largest cities.

A third candidate has entered the race for Douglas County District Attourney. 56 year-old Martin Miller officially filed for today. Miller has been practicing law in Lawrence in 1981 and served as an Assistant District Attourney in Douglas County from 1985-1996.

A 19-year-old Lawrence man has been arrested in connection with last week's beating of 20-year-old Travis Adams. Barry L. Sterling was arrested this morning and booked into Douglas County Jail on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder, according to Sgt. Mike Pattrick, a Lawrence Police spokesman.

A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit challenging Lawrence rental housing laws but gave the plaintiffs two weeks to make fresh arguments in the case. U.S. District Judge Kathryn Vratil said City Hall was within its rights in 2001 when it passed an ordinance prohibiting more than three unrelated roommates to occupy such housing and started a rental licensing and inspection program to enforce the new law.
