Neighbors are speaking out tonight after a Lawrence man is arrested for firing an assault rifle outside his home.
The suspect, 25-year-old Miguel Ayala, faces misdemeanor and felony charges after reportedly firing an assault rifle outside his home just west of Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
Court documents show he also faces charges for being in possession of drugs with intent to sell and drug paraphernalia.
Neighbor Carole Hodges and her husband were awakened by the sound of gunfire around 11:30 last night.
She says when she looked out her bedroom window, she saw Ayala shooting, what police would later describe as an SKS assault rifle, into the air.
"The guy that lives there and then a friend of his that was there. They were standing outside and then they shot off a gun the second time, then they went in the house and turned out all the lights because police cars were coming around," Hodges said.
Hodges says responding officers drove around a while before leaving the intersection of 3rd and Michigan Street, and shortly after she says Ayala was back outside shooting the assault rifle again.
"I saw him bend down and pick up the shells and put them in the trash can," she said.
Police say they received two calls, one at 11:31 p.m. and another just six minutes later. It was during their second visit that officers noticed occupants inside the home turn the lights out. Police also saw spent casings outside the door of the home. After entering the home, officers say they seized the assault rifle, other weapons, significant amounts of drugs, paraphernalia and cash.
Hodges says she was surprised when she found out.
"They (have) been really good neighbors, they were always quiet. I didn't figure anything was going on over there until last night when they were shooting off this gun," she said.
Ayala is being held tonight on a $26,800 bond.
He's due back in court Wednesday.
