First, something for New Year's Eve:
Split Lip Rayfield has a reputation for whipping crowds into a sweaty frenzy. And though they don't often get credit for their songwriting, the four-piece has some great tunes about bad cars, bad jobs, bad women, loss and longing that they've taken off the dusty shelves of the old-timey circuit and updated to make sense for today's working class. Split Lip Rayfield plays 9 p.m. tonight at The Bottleneck.
Saturday evening at the Olive Gallery, local artist Paul Flinders will unveil his haunting, illustratorly pieces during the opening of his first solo exhibition, "a bird, i wish i were." These mixed media works on paper at first appear transfixed on isolation and melancholy. But the artist says where there's darkness there's also light; he's actually exploring the idea of greater possibilities and fulfilling potential. See if he's communicated these ideas effectively during a reception from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday.
