Mary's Lake closed to public fishing

Monday, August 23, 2004

Dead fish floating in Mary's Lake in southeast Lawrence has prompted the city to today close the public lake to fishing while state environmental officials investigate.

"Parks and Recreation personnel noticed late last week several dead fish in the lake and called in a fisheries biologist with the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, who monitor and stock the lake, to assist in finding the cause," the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department announced today.

Because the number of dead fish increased during the weekend, the city has also contacted the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to investigate.

Mary's Lake is located in Prairie Park, 2811 Kensington.
