The Lawrence school board voted unanimously Monday to not renew contracts of 26 teachers for the 2004-2005 school year.
The nonrenewals were the result of decreases in enrollment and federal funds. Austin Turney, board president, noted that some of the teachers might be rehired once the district received word on how much state and federal money was available for teacher salaries.
"Certain funds we anticipate receiving have not yet been confirmed," he said.
The 26 layoffs are about 40 fewer than in the past two years.
