Robert Altman is the most famous Kansas City filmmaker to still be pursuing his craft. The 79-year-old's latest effort is "The Company," which centers around the daily routines of the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago. "Scream" star Neve Campbell co-wrote the tale and does all her own dancing. And there is plenty of dancing to be found in a film that favors showcasing rehearsals and production numbers rather than providing a compelling story line.
Also opening is "Man on Fire," a violent revenge fantasy featuring Denzel Washington as a brooding bodyguard who tracks a kidnapped girl through the treacherous streets of Mexico City.
Finally, Jennifer Garner gets to tackle that familiar plot device: the body-switching movie. Like Tom Hanks in 1988's "Big," Garner uses her innate charm in "13 Going on 30" to smooth over the story's predictable ingredients.
And speaking of the mind of a child in an adult's body, I'm Jon Niccum with Screen Scene.
